The diversity of fungal communities associated with biological soil crusts in arid and semiarid regions are one of the least explored habitats. In particular, the Tegger desert in China remains mycologically poorly investigated. In this study, we investigate the diversity of fungal communities associated with different crusts (i.e., cyanobacterial crusts, moss crusts and lichen crusts) at five locations in Shapotou Region using cultivation and 454 pyrosequencing.
