Cellulose, extracted from hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) stems, was successfully modified through the homogeneous reaction with hexamethylene diisocyanate in the green solvent NMMO.Cotton was also used in this research because of its high cellulose content. The clew-like cellulose carbamate was obtained through cross-linking reaction. It was found that adhesion phenomenon appeared with the increasing amount of cotton cellulose.A possible model of formation of the products was also inferred in this paper. The cellulose carbamate was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal gravimetry (TG),which showed that the clew-like spheres were about 1 μm in diameter and the carbonyl group,NH-group and urethane were introduced.
