Self-assembly of planar π-conjugated molecules into columnar aggregates is a promising strategy for formation of nanostructures for charge and exciton transport. While columnar stacking seems to be inherent to many planar π-systems controlled formation of desired superstructures such as rods, tubes and sheets is a great challenge. The use of charged π-systems may provide additional opportunities to tune electronic properties and superstructures via the counterions.
