[Background] Functional dyspepsia (FD) is highly prevalent. We evaluated sleep quality and mood symptoms among Chinese FD patients, aim to quantified the relationship between FD severity, disordered sleep, anxiety, depression and somatization. Methods Study participants were adults who met Rome Ⅲ criteria for FD.somatization, anxiety, depression and FD symptoms were determined based on data collected from 121 patients (mean age 55 ± 13 years;75% female and 100% Yellow race) who completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) , the Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90).Healthy controls (n =120;mean age 54± 11 years;69% female and 100% Yellow race) answered the same questions excluding those which focused on FD symptoms.Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to assess the factors influencing FD.RESULTS :The mean duration of FD symptoms was 9.6±7.8 months.Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores was higher in FD patients with moderate and severe symptoms compared with those with mild symptoms and controls (P <0.001).The Somatization, Anxiety and Depression score of SCL-90 were higher in FD patients than in controls (P <0.001).Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that low level of education(P =0.005) and low quantities of sleep (P =0.009)0 were predictors for FD.Conclusions FD is associated with disordered sleep and low level education.Sleep disturbances in FD patients appear to be associated with symptom severity and higher levels of anxiety, depression and somatization.Further research is needed to determine whether disordered sleep promotes symptoms of FD.
