It has been hypothesized that the antenna1 lobe (AL) within the locust olfactory system encodes odors through dynamically evolving ensembles of active cells.However, such a coding strategy requires the long time integration of AL signals prior to stimulus detection, a prolong process that is inconsistent with the swift behavioral response.Using a model locust AL system, we show that there is another possible coding mechanism embedded within the AL system, i.e., a temporal binding code that is induced by spike correlations within an odor-dependent set of neurons and that allows rapid odor detection by downstream elements.
