We examined the effects of different forms of nitrogen and iron on the structure and function of natural Yellow Sea phytoplankton communities incubated in 800-liter mesocosms on board in March and May 2005.Significant differences were found between effects of nitrogen and iron on phytoplankton communities and primary production in one of six experiments in March and May,but no differences were observed between effects of different forms of nitrogen on total community biomass (measured as chlorophyll a) in May.
