豫西地区刘家沟组中下部发育多层砾岩，其中扁平砾石与球形砾石共生，扁平砾多顺层排列，球形砾常具圈层结构。因该砾岩层发育普遍，特征明显，成为刘家沟组的区域划分对比标志之一。
青藏高原由昌都、羌塘、拉萨和特提斯喜马拉雅块体及其间的造山增生体组成。早中生代是这些块体之间的古特提洋闭合和新特提斯洋形成的关键时期。
在三叠纪鳍龙类(Sauropterygia)中，纯信龙类(Pistosauroid)与侏罗纪和白垩纪的蛇颈龙(Plesiosauria)关系最为密切。蛇颈龙以桨状四肢和长长的颈部为特征，纯信龙在形态上介于蛇颈龙与幻龙(Nothosauroids)之间，四肢已具桨状的外形，三叠纪纯信龙对于探索蛇颈龙的起源与早期演化具有重要的意义。
