The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare primary tumor. Here is the first ease of repeatedly recurrent malignant SFTP with DPS diagnosed in China in 2005and followed to 2011.We reviewed the English literature through Medline from 1979 to 2011and summarized 45 SFTP with DPS cases-22 benign and 23 malignant neoplasms based on histopathology. The mean max diameters of benign and malignant tumor were 21.7± 5.0cm and17.6±4.1cm, respectively. Most tumors present in the fifth to seventh decades of life.54% cases are females, a slight more than males. They all have hypoglycemia related symptoms, including abnormal consciousness, sweating, and confusion.Weight loss and progressive dyspnea were also seen in both benign and malignant SFTPs.All benign and most malignant SFTP tumors have sharply circumscribed borders. Most benign and malignant tumors located in the right and medium and low of thoracic cavity.About 45% malignant tumors were associated with complex excision, compared to only 27.8% in benign SFTP.2 cases of malignant and benign tumors were associated with local recurrence. No lymph node and distant metastasis were found in literature.Only 2 cases among 3 benign cases who had detailed information showed little to moderate uptake of PET.Most cases may get the diagnosis of SFTP through transthoracic needle biopsy, but sometimes it can not differentiate between benign and malignant SFTP due to limitation of tissue.Local relapse can occur in both benign tumor and malignant tumors.Complete initial excision of the tumor mass is the most important treatment to control local recurrence.Local treatment such as local radiotherapy, hyperthermia, and local chemotherapy may be useful auxiliary methods to control recurrence. But in most cases these methods get little effect.Bronchoscopy examinations have no diagnostic value to these tumors.
