  The adoption of metal-mesh thin film interference filters used in Far Infrared astronomy as meta-materials by full characterisation of their properties through detailed FEA simulation combined with material effective properties has allowed the creation of additional novel elements such as thin flat lenses.In this latest development,spatially tuned birefringence has allowed us to design and build a focusing lens which splits orthogonal polarizations to focus them in two separate spatial focus points.
