Starch is the most widespread and abundant storage carbohydrate in plants. We depend upon starch for our nutrition, exploit its unique properties in industry, and use it as a feedstock for bioethanol production. In order to know more about the starch synthesis in maize storage organ,we carried our study.Firstly, starch in maize kernels was carefully measured among the Huangzaosi and its derived lines. Two inbred lines with the highest and lowest starch contents among these derived lines were chosen for our study. The dynamic changes of total starch accumulation, corresponding enzyme activities and gene expressions during the development of maize kernels were analyzed between the two inbred lines. Results indicated that the enzymes involved in starch synthesis in Qi-310 (highest starch) cooperated with each other stronger than that in Jing-24 (lowest starch). And co-expression of the starch synthesis genes could be clearly observed in Qi-310 compared to Jing-24.In our study, sucrose was also measured between the two inbred lines. All our results indicated that co-expression of starch synthesis genes play a central role in higher storage starch in maize kernels.
