Intensive field measurements were carried out at a mountain site (Mt.Tai Mo Shan,TMS) and an urban site (Tsuen Wan,TW) at the foot of the mountain in September – November 2010 in Hong Kong.The source apportionments of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) together with carbonyl compounds (i.e.formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) were first explored by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model.Seven and eight sources were identified at TMS and TW,respectively.In particular,the primary and secondary fractions of carbonyl compounds were first separated by the PMF model.The PMF results were input into a photochemical box model,i.e.the observation-based model (OBM),which was used to evaluate the ozoneprecursors relationship.The O3 production was found to be mostly VOC-limited at both sites,suggesting that reducing NO could increase O3.In addition,solvent usage,diesel and gasoline vehicular emissions and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage made the significant contributions to photochemical O3 formation at both sites.Among all the sources,toluene,formaldehyde,acetaldehyde and m,p-xylene were mainly responsible for the O3 formation in Hong Kong.
