Since the discovery of near-infrared (NIR) luminescence from Bi-doped aluminosilicate glasses, Bi doped NIR luminescent materials have been attracting great attention as a candidate material to achieve broadband near-infrared (NIR)optical amplification in the optical telecommunication window.A variety of Bi-based NIR luminescent materials, i.e., oxide glasses and fibers, chalcogenide glasses, chloride glasses, crystals, molecular crystals, ionic liquids, etc., have been developed.Notably, fiber lasers with output power over 10 W have been realized in a broad spectral range of 1150-1550 nm.However, the fabrication of glass films activated by Bi greatly lags behind fibers, thus hindering the application of this smart material for waveguide amplifiers and lasers.In this talk, I will discuss recent advances in the fabrication of a series of glass films (e.g., multi-layers, Si-rich silica, and oxynitride) activated by Bi, the manipulation of Bi active centers, and their potential applications.
