@@ Nepali, an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European) spoken in Nepal, northern India, and part of Bhutan, has commonly been assumed to be an SOV wh-in-situ language (Toba 1998, Cardona et al. 2003, Bal 2006, Norcliffe 2006, Nagila 2009). In Nepali, wh-phrases (especially argument wh-phrases, i.e. wh-phrases functioning as arguments in a clause) generally stay in place where non-wh phrases with the same grammatical functions will occur, as shown in (1) and (3). However, a careful study of wh-questions in Nepali shows that sometimes wh-phrases (both argument wh-phrases and adjunct wh-phrases) may undergo wh-movement, as shown in (2) and (4).
