Purpose Brainlateralizationisconsideredhighlyrelatedtohumanpsychologicalandbehavioralcharacteristics.Itwaswidely believedthatthelefthemispheresupportedlanguageandlogicalthinking,whiletherighthemispherewasinvolvedtoagreater extentincreativityandintuition.Subcorticalstructures,whichincludethebasalgangliaandpartsofthelimbicsystem,havekey rolesinlearning,motorcontrolandemotion,butalsocontributetohigher-orderexecutivefunctions.Priorstudieshavereported volumetricasymmetryofsubcorticalstructures.However,resultsonlateralizationofregionalvolumesforthesubcortical structuresarestillcontroversialandnon-conclusive.Herein,weexaminedthevolumetricasymmetryofthesubcorticalbrain structuresin110healthyindividuals. Methods Atotalof110healthyindividuals(males/female:42/68,meanage,48.6±12.3years,agerange:21~74years)were includedinthisstudy.Allparticipantsareright-handedandwritteninformedconsentswereobtained.WeperformedMRIbrain scansusinga3Tscanner(GESignaHDxt,Milwaukee,USA)equippedwithan8-channelheadcoil.TheanatomicT1-weighted imageswereacquiredusinga3DT1-weightedfastspoiledgradientecho(FSPGR)sequence.Imageanalysiswasperformedusing toolsfromFSL(FMRIBSoftwareLibrary,version5.0.0,http://www.fmrib.ox.ac.uk/fsl/;OxfordUniversity,Oxford,UnitedKingdom). FIRST(partofFSL,version5.0.0)wasusedtosegmentthebrainsubcorticalstructures.Volumedataofallthesubcorticalnuclei wasobtained.StatisticalanalyseswereperformedusingSPSS13.0(SPSSInc.,Chicago,IL).Firstly,apairedt-testwasusedto comparevolumetricdifferencesbetweenrightandleftcaudatenuclei.Secondly,volumemeasurementsfromeachpatientwere standardizedtothevalueofnormalcontrolsusingaZ-scoretransformation.Foreachpatient,asymmetricvolumeswere calculatedusinganasymmetryindex(AI):AI=(LR)/(L+R).“L”and“R”refertotheleftandrightvolumeofeachstructure. Results Comparedwithcontralateralstructures,wefoundthevolumesweresignificantlygreaterinthelefthemispherethanthat intherightoneforseveralsubcorticalstructuresincludingthethalamus,putamen,amygdala,andnucleusaccumbens(P< 0.001).Thevolumesofthenucleuscaudateandhippocampusinthelefthemisphereweresignificantlysmallerthanthatinthe rightside(P<0.001).Moreover,thesumofthesubcorticalvolumesinthelefthemisphereisgreaterthanthatintherightone(Left:31.00±3.15cm3,Right:30.66±3.06cm3;P<0.001). Conclusion Werevealedaleftwardasymmetryforthethalamus,putamen,amygdala,andnucleusaccumbens,andarightward asymmetryforthecaudateandhippocampusinthe110right-handedhealthyindividuals.Thesefindingswillcontributetoour understandingofalteredasymmetryinsomepathologicalstate.
