Photovoltaic modules operate in a hostile environment: outdoors.Stresses in the outdoor environment include ultraviolet and visible radiation, moisture in the form of rain, condensation and humidity, high temperature and temperature cycling, internal electric fields, mechanical load from wind and snow, impact from hail and sand.To better understand the effect of these stresses on the photovoltaic backsheets, we have studied PV modules from a wide range installations and climates.Modules were evaluated for their performance (power), safety (electrical insulation), appearance and signs of degradation and change.Analytical imaging methods including IR thermography and EL imaging were used to better understand performance uniformity and the identification of defective areas.Using this information, specific areas of the module are identified for further investigation using a broad range of analytical methods to better understand chemical and physical changes to the materials and their impact on functional properties.
