Since 2007, Bartlett Tree Experts has been providing virtually round the clock care to the 400+ Swamp White Oaks that were hand selected for planting at the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan.We will take you through the ups and downs as well as the ins and outs of caring for trees in above ground planters in the northeastern United States, the challenges of maintaining proper soil moisture under varying weather conditions with highly varied soil types, and the pressures of responding to the political trade winds in NYC.The tree planting project and the design of the 9/11 Memorial Plaza focuses on environmental sustainability through the recapture of irrigation and rain water,the cooling provided by the shade of the trees to Plaza visitors, and the use of recycled materials including rubber mulch around the trees on the Plaza.This presentation will review the unique "floating" nature of the 9/11 Memorial Plaza and the micro-climate weve encountered amongst the buildings and hardscape.
