The noble scallop Chlamys nobilis, an important marine economic mollusk, display polymorphism not only in shell colors including orange, purple, brown, and orange-purple, but also in adductor colors and mantle.Our previous study showed that the total carotenoid content (TCC) in noble scallop Chlamys nobilis was related to body tissue, shell color, and gender, which was higher in individuals with orange shell, mantle and adductor (Zheng HP, Liu HL, Zhang T, et al.Total carotenoid differences in scallop tissues of Chlamys nobilis (Bivalve: Pectinidae) with regard to gender and shell colour.Food Chem, 2010, 122 (4): 1164-1167).
