Cardiac arrhythmias are a source of significant morbidity and mortality worldwide.Nowadays, their treatment is still based on drugs with limited efficacy and safety profile, mainly due to our lack of knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms responsible for the genesis of arrhythmias. This review intends to discuss the cellular and molecular basis of cardiac electric impulses and their relevance in both congenital and acquired arrhythmias.
