Recent studies have revealed that most prostate cancers carry a unique chromosomal rearrangement leading to the TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusion.TMPRSS2 is an androgen-regulated gene in the prostate, and ERG is an oncogene belonging to the ETS family.The fusion of TMPRSS2 and ERG genes causes aberrant function of the ERG gene, which may lead to oncogenesis in the prostate.To understand the role of this gene fusion in the development of prostate cancer, we evaluated the TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusion in prostate cancer patients specimens with focus on the following 2 areas: One area was to study the TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusion in prostatic small cell carcinoma (SCC), the most aggressive type of prostate cancer.
