The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Tai Chi Chuan on the performance of obstacle crossing in elderly subjects aged over 65 years.Fifteen Tai Chi group(TCG)subjects were compared with the fifteen general group(GG)subjects. The kinematic parameters and ground reaction force(GRF)during three heights of obstacle crossing were synchronously recorded by the Vicon motion system(250 Hz)and two Kistler force plates(1000 Hz).Two-way mixed-design ANOVA(p<0.05)was used. Results showed that only the TCG could produce the forward GRF on the supporting foot to propel the body when the toe of the leading foot was vertically above the obstacle. The TCG also showed better gait performance than the GG during obstacle crossing.
