The involvement of women in the decision making regarding their treatment and care for breast cancer is a relatively new model.The medical studies that demonstrated lumpectomy plus radiation as being equally effective as mastectomy in early stage disease gave doctors the possibility to enable women to decide upon their surgical treatment.However, this left women with extremely difficult decisions to make.Increasingly, more decisions opened up in the model of breast cancer, decisions such as whether to have breast reconstruction if mastectomy is performed, and the timing of reconstruction, whether to have adjuvant systemic chemotherapy for reducing the likelihood of recurrence, and more complicated medical decisions that the woman may wish to be involved in.
