In addition to relying on natural ecological resources to mitigate urban heat island effect, well design of urban landscape infrastructure is also highly praised.According to the research of East China Normal University (2011), residential land is the primary contributor to urban heat island in Shanghai, followed by industry land.Among the residential land uses, areas with low to middle rise buildings and low vegetation cover result in stronger urban heat island effects than areas with high rise buildings or areas with high vegetation cover.Hideki and Masakazu (2009) from Koke University, Japan found that the air temperature reduction by the spread of grass-covered parking areas is calculated to be 0.1, in comparison with an asphalt surface.lisa and Stephen (2011) from the University of Hong Kong put forward to build pocket parks in Hong Kong to relieve the urban heat island. In order to evaluate the impact of building construction on urban heat island intensity, University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus is selected as a case study to be investigated by ENVl-met.As a response to the growing demand of the University development, since 2006 about 40% new buildings have been built. This kind of implementation transformed the land use from green spaces into building. As a result, the ENVI-met simulation calculates that the current ambient temperature in the campus increased about 1.5 in last five years due to the reduction of greenery and the addition of concrete buildings.Furthermore, the increase of urban heat island intensity in the campus as high as 1.
