Biodiesel fuel is produced by transesterification of oils and fats with an alcohol, usually methanol, in presence of a catalyst.The resulting product therefore can contain not only the desired alkyl ester product (FAMEs) but also unreacted starting material (triglycerides), reaction products (glycerol) and intermediates from the step-wise reaction (mono-and diglycerides).These impurities affect the quality of the Biodiesel and have to fall within specifications as mentioned in EN-14214 or ASTM D 6751.Standard procedures, like the EN 14105 or ASTM D 6584 method use high temperature GC analysis up to 380℃.Due to the thermal stress, polyimide-coated fused silica columns will break after some time.To avoid this an UltimetalTM column, the "SelectTM Biodiesel for Glycerides", was developped with low bleed characteristics and good column performance, also available with a pre-coupled and tested Retention Gap.For the application of the FAME analysis (EN 14103) and headspace Methanol (EN 14110) also Select B iodiesel columns are available.
