We investigate the land-offshore contrast in lightning activity and its relation to precipitation and convective available potential energy (CAPE) in South China from 2001 to 2012,using the from the Guangdong lightning location system, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite and the ERA-interim reanalysis dataset. For this analysis,we specifically considered the large-current cloud-to-ground lightning flashes with absolute peak current thresholds greater than 50 kA,75 kA and 100 kA.The densities, proportions and peak currents of lightning flashes, their monthly and diurnal variations, the rainyield per flash and the sensitivity of lightning flashes to changesinCAPE are taken into account.Prominent land-offshore differences are observed for several of the above-mentioned parameters.Furthermore,we determined that the land-offshore contrast differs among various types of lightning and between the rainy season and the non-rainy season. The results strongly suggest that the offshore region experiences rapid changes in lightning characteristics. This study is expected to enhance the knowledge concerning the land-ocean differences in lightning activi.
