Earthquake is one of the severest natural disasters for human beings.In China, Earthquake is highly frequent, intense, and widely distributed.One year ago, a serious earthquake, magnitude of 8.0, occurred in Wenchuan in Sichuan, which is still vivid in our memory.After grief, it aroused more of our thinking on the engineering building structures.How to make our buildings to withstand such a large earthquake so that possible fatality would be diminished?.How to reduce earthquake hazards? With the development of society,two solutions have been proposed: the traditional seismic methods and recently developed base isolation methods.Traditional anti-seismic structures rely on plastic deformation alter yielding and hysteretic property to dissipate earthquake-induced energy to prevent structures from collapsing.But this method ignores the control of structural damage.Base isolation technology is developed in recent decades.A control body is sealed at the basement or other locations of a building to isolate or dissipate seismic energy in order to cut off or reduce the transmission of seismic energy to the superstructure.In this way, the seismic response of structure is reduced and thus the safeties of buildings are ensured.Lots of theory and practice have proved that the base isolation technique is one of the effective ways of earthquake prevention and disaster reduction.In our country, researches on base isolation were once fell behind, but it developed rapidly and has been used widely.Therefore, in the serious disaster area of the Wenchuan earthquake, the isolation technology is worthy of being promoted.Dujiangyan is a beautiful city, but it was severely damaged.So it is specially significant to use base isolation.China HanJia Design Group began its base isolation techniques there.The successful application of base isolation in this project marks the first step of isolation technology in the most damaged disaster area after Wenchuan earthquake It is quite significant.This paper studies a commercial building in DuJiangYan, the aim of which is to provide reference to the development and use of base isolation technology later, what is more, it is our companys contribution in reconstruction of WenChuan earthquake disaster area.
