Biopores are an important factor for nutrient cycling in soils. They provide biologically highly active zones in the soil and can be re-colonized by roots developing soil-root interfaces for water and nutrient uptake. On the other hand earthworms can modify previously generated root pathways by changing the architecture of the soil pore space especially in the rhizosphere due to compression and excretion of casts and linings.
