Global food production is reliant on semi-arid soils that cover one fifth of the global land area,with the extent of these regions expected to increase with climate change.In the semiarid regions of southern Australia the majority of rainfall is during the winter cropping period,although infrequent summer rainfall events (typically 5-20 mm rain) do occur.
