The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc and calcium-dependent endopeptidases that degrade most of the extracellular matrix components during progression of cancer.The aim of this work was to compare MMP2 and MMP-9, TIMP-l and TIMP-2 (MMPs specific inhibitors) plasma concentrations and gelatinase activity, during first line chemotherapy in smoker and never smoker lung cancer patients.Blood samples from 67 patients with primary lung adenocarcinoma were examined: 22 were tobacco smokers (LCT), 23 had been exposed to wood smoke (LCW), and in 22 it was not possible to identify a risk factor (LCN).
