Vertical deposition technique to fabricate thin film solid artificial opals is becoming widely used.In present work,we report on solvent modification and its effect on the arrangement of SiO2 colloidal crystals.We used aqueous ethanol mixture solution in replacing the ethanol solution,the colloidal crystal multilayers were prepared with larger sphere diameter (Fig.1a) and thickness up to 20 μm in one step (Fig.1b) by the vertical deposition technique.Furthermore,micrometer-sized periodic stripe patterns of colloidal particles were formed along the solution surface when a higher concentration of ethanol solvent was used (Fig.1c,d).The spacing between adjacent stripes was about 100μm and the stripes became narrow when the bigger spheres were used.The samples also exhibit an ordered closed-packed arrangement of the colloidal spheres in the stripes,as shown in Fig.1c.The patterned materials may find applications in photonic circuits,switches,mirrors,filters,waveguides,superprisms and sensors.
