Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel tumor therapy strategy which was developed based on transarterial embolization technique and selective photothermal ablation using gold nanoshells on silica nanorattles (GSNs). Methods The tumor-burdened New Zealand white rabbits were divided into six groups.Six groups including the blank control group,the artery injection,intravenous injection of GSNs,artery GSNs+NIR,venous GSNs + NIR and pure NIR group.Each group of GSNs injection amount is equal to 1 mg/ml,a CT scan in the baseline data,3 days,6 days,9days,12 days and 15 days in all groups.With the use of transarterial administration,GSNs nanoparticles were allowed enter the arterial supplying tumor with declined the circulation throughout the body and the elimination by reticuloendothelial system (RES).Utilizing the near-infrared (NIR) plasmonic absorbance of those nanoparticles,selective photothermal tumor ablation was fulfilled and excellent antitumor effect were monitored by CT imaging for post-treatment prognosis.Also,comparative study on in vivo biodistribution and safety were performed and benign biocompatibility was elucidated.
