溪流及浅河(河道窄、水位浅、采样时无需使用船只的淡水水体)是地面水的重要组成部分和重要的水生生态系统类型，及时掌握溪流及浅河水质对于保护生物多样性和保障下游水源地水质均具有重要意义。生物监测在国外广泛应用于溪流及浅河的水质监测与评价并建立了标准的指标和方法体系，国内学者也在湖泊、水库的生物监测方面做了大量工作，但应用于溪流及浅河的生物监测指标体系和标准方法尚未建立。
