Friction behaviors of the diamond-like carbon (DLC) film sliding against Si3N4 ball were investigated on a ball-on-disk tester in different atmospheres. The worn surface morphologies of the DLC films were observed on a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a 3-D surface profilometer, respectively. The chemical states of some typical elements on the worn surface of DLC film were revealed by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).Interesting experimental results which are quite different from previous reports were obtained.
