The biogenesis of beta-barrel outer membrane proteins (OMPs) in Gram – negative bacteria is a complex process. The transportation of OMPs through the periplasm is a key step during the process. The periplasm is an aqueous and oxidizing environment, so the insoluble and aggregation–prone OMPs must be kept in a folding competent state during their traverse in the periplasm.
