Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases(CVDs),including coronary heart disease,stroke and other circulatory diseases,are the number one cause of death and disability globally.The increasing incidence of diabetes and CVDs is largely attributable to the rapid rise in the prevalence of obesity,which has now reached epidemic proportions worldwide.Obesity predisposes insulin resistance,hypertension,metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes,which are the major risk factors for CVDs.Despite intensive research in the past decades,there is currently no cure available for these deadly diseases.
