The heterogeneous nucleation of S (Al2CuMg) precipitates at dislocations during artificial ageing is a very common phenomenon in Al-Cu-Mg alloy.Specifically, the nucleation of the S variant or variant combination along dislocations is rather than random but shows strong variant preference.To date several variant selection rules concerning crystallographic relationships between dislocations and precipitates have been proposed, but none of them has been fully verified, mainly because the crystallographic features of the former dislocations can not be determined after long time elevated ageing and precipitate growth.
