It has been known for centuries thatinhalation of inert gas above a threshold concentration results in narcosis. However, inert gas is generally regarded as unable to directly impact functions of biomolecules due to the very low chemical reactivity of inert gases and the insufficient physical absorption on the biomolecules of the discrete inert gas molecule at room temperature. In the past fifteen years, experimental and theoretical studies have confirmed the existence of aggregated gas molecules (namely, nanobubbles) at the water-solid interface [1].
