A fibre-optic based Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system has been used to monitor the gas product temperature profile and to investigate the inertisation performance in an underground coal mine.Inertisation exercise used Gorniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) inertisation unit which was build based on a Polish jet engine to remove the oxygen by inert gases in targeted region atmosphere on the purpose of starving fire incident and remove explosive/fire hazards.A GAG inertisation station was deployed to inertise approximately 5.4 km of an operational underground coal mine. For the first time in Australia, personnel were permitted to make observations underground while the inertisation process was underway. It was also the first time that the DTS was deployed during the use of the GAG jet.The use of the DTS in this project clearly brought new insight into the function and performance of the GAG jet that was unknown up to that point in time. This paper outlines the findings and how they have informed decisions for emergency preparedness in mine sites in Queensland.
