Aim: To explore whether the theory of"the constancy of the milieu exterieur" [Myers 1982] applies to behavioural maladaptation and changes in the ageing mind.Proposition: 1.Psychiatric illness arises because of i) egocentricity and ii) feelings of dissatisfaction in terms of not being understood nor of receiving sufficient attention and or care, or iii) oversensitivity to environment factors, perceived as unyielding or harsh leads to withdrawal/depression and/or of poor esteem or self-worth and attitudes of others/world as uncaring.Treament: Requires a shift from 1) self-focus to needs of and caring for another, including giving others the benefit of doubt; 2) to see the world in terms of "even though I am one person, in the grand scheme of things Ⅰ have an essential and important and unique role to play" i.e.focus on self worth.3) Less dependence/emphasis (blame) on the role of others/world, 4) active responsibility for doing good has to do with self.Proposition: 2.Cognitive function and functional cognition (capacitance) differ.Cognitive function is often assessed using abstract tests. These show a difference between young and old, the latter faring poorly on abstract examination. However, when the tests are presented in a more meaningful and non-abstract way the age difference disappears as improvement of older persons scores occurs.Analysis: Generosity of spirit characterise the normative ageing process and familiarity or meaning influences patterns of performance in older age. This suggests that rather than referencing to the abstract or knowledge acquisition, older people reference to meaning. This generates memory in a different area, perhaps calling on long-term memory more, either as an adaptation to organic change or to experience and adaptation (maturation) as we age.Discussion: 1.Psychiatric/mood disorder results from egocentricity and / or maladaptation to external stress, whereas 2.Adequate and appropriate adaptation underscores mental function in normative ageing. Conclusion: Behaviour analysis can be understood in terms of Biological response.
