Spermatogenesis is an intricately regulated process of cellular differentiation transforming primordial germ cells to spermatozoa.Aberrant gene expression during male germ cell development can lead to abnormal sperm production and infertility.Several transcription factors are known to play key roles in the differentiation of spermatogonia and meiotic initiation.BAF250a, a defining subunit of the BAF chromatin remodeling complex that hydrolyze ATP to noncovalently restructure, mobilize, or eject nucleosomes to modulate transcription factor access to chromosomal DNA, is a trithorax group (TrxG) protein.Recent studies mapping the targets of TrxG action in mouse and human ES cells suggest these proteins also play a role in sustaining a heritable epigenetic state uniquely associated with pluripotency.
