Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ON J) related with the use of potent bisphosphonates has been defined as the persistence of exposed bone in the oral cavity after adequate treatment for 8 weeks, in the absence of local metastatic disease and without previous radiation therapy to the affected area.Although the pathophysiology of ONJ has not been elucidated, a reduced bone remodeling as a result of powerful osteoclast inhibition is hypothesized to create a bone micro-environment prone to osteonecrosis.
