The choice of a green building material from their alternatives has to be done by applying the LCA methodology of ISO 14040.The methodology has the advantage of evaluating the ecological impact of a material produced in a determined environment.LCA gives us the information that a product which is accepted as ecological friendly for one environment, region and country may be accepted as quite the opposite for the other. The final decision also is affected by the goal and scope definition put forward at the beginning of the application of the methodology. This paper tries to find the answer of the question "How is a building material defined to be environmentally friendly for the whole world?"So that the selection criteria will not be changed according to the tools developed every new day in the world. This paper is evaluating the international legislation as well as the green building certification instruments regarding their criteria of green material selection. And put forward the parameters which may change one material ecological friendly or not according to the differing circumstances. This helps architects to define the minimum requirements in the selection of a green building material as well as the manufacturers to define the rules to produce environmentally safe products.
