The introduction of precious metal cations such as Pd(Ⅱ) and Au(Ⅲ) into complex oxide hosts stabilizes the oxidized form of these oxophobic metals and can, with judicious choice of the host lattice, lead to increased lability of lattice oxygen.The resuiting low surface materials are surprisingly active and stable oxidation catalysts, with rate laws that depend on the redox stoichiometry of the feed.The precious metals can be extruded under reducing conditions, but are readily reincorporated into the complex oxide under oxidizing conditions.The catalysts also exhibit spontaneous regeneration following SO2 poisoning.
