The phylogenomic analysis of 20 fungal genomes showed that Volvariella volvacea was located at the cluster consisting of grass-decay fungi and acted as ancient type of grass-decay fungi.Due to the close relationships between Schizophyllum commune and grass-decay fungi and they belong to the same cluster, it was postulated that grass-decay fungi were evolved from S.commune.The estimation of molecular clock showed that the divergence time of V.volvacea was about 209 million years ago.
