The City of Surrey,Canada, population 520,000,is the second largest City in the Province of British Columbia; it is also the fastest growing, having averaged nearly 1,000 new residents each month for the last thirty years. The requirements for new housing stock, commercial buildings and industrial sites has resulted in impacts to the Citys natural forests, and a need to restore the tree canopy after individual trees and forest stands are necessarily removed for development.Through an Official Community Plan and a Sustainability Charter, the City identifies the need to have a connected network of natural ecosystems comprised of urban forests, riparian areas and wetlands.
