Synthesis and electrical properties of Aurivillius-type sodium bismuth titanate at low temperatures

  The Aurivillius-type sodium bismuth titanate (Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 or NBT) powders were prepared by two-step hydrothermal route with starting chemicals containing Bi(NO3)3.5H2O, Ti(C4H9O)4, NaNO3 and (CH2OH)2.The results indicate that the elemental ratio in the composition of hydrothermally derived nanopowders is very close to stoichiometic ratio of NBT, which possessed an average diameter of about 1.0μm and a thickness of about 30nm.The synthesis temperatures of powders are as low as 250~280 ℃, which is the lowest temperature among those published literatures, and the gel precursor and hydrothermal environment play an important role in the formation of NBT powders at low temperatures.The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of NBT ceramics resulting from hydrothermally derived powders are investigated, and some electrical properties of NBT ceramics prepared by hydrothermal route are super to that prepared by solid state processing.
