Conventional forms of scholarship in landscape architecture are insufficient to meet the challenges of the 21 st century. The nature, scale and rate of global landscape transformation require new ways of investigating and new types of knowledge that can be more widely used.Meta-analysis across multiple cases and research through practice offer opportunity to develop a more systematic understanding of effective design strategies.Selection of case studies to identify the most effective strategic design decisions in different contexts is identified as a key research agenda for landscape architecture.University departments of landscape architecture that engage students in practice based research can be leaders in developing and implementing this agenda.
