As wireless networking becomes increasingly important as a means of distributing Internet Protocol (IP) data and even real time high definition (HD) video in real-time, the obstacles imposed by unreliable wireless communication technologies become ever more costly.Current wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi 802.11 require an operating environment with direct Line-Of-Sight (LOS) between communication nodes, limiting their effective use in many Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) application environments. There are a number of applications in Broadcasting, in emergency response to major incidents and in policing large events that require reliable NLOS wireless data and video gathering to support data transmission between and around buildings, inside buildings, or in caves, ravines, or forested areas.Satellite communications is excellent at establishing high capacity links to a portable location but distributing the data around the satellite terminal using a private wireless network to mobile users can be very advantageous. This paper introduces tailored Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) digital modulation, a communication technology designed to be reliable in high multipath NLOS environments as a way to cost effectively distribute wireless data from the satellite terminal. The Wireless COFDM mesh network also increases the reliability of wireless point-to-point, and wireless mesh communication in the NLOS environment. To demonstrate the reliability of the tailored COFDM technology this paper will present results of tests performed using COFDM devices to transmit IP data and video in a complex urban surveillance environment.
