After receiving the BSc and MSc (organic chemistry) degrees from Hangzhou University (now part of Zhejiang University),I spent four years at University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with Prof.Dennis D.Tanner working in the area of organic reaction mechanisms with emphasis on electron transfer reactions. At University of Alberta, I received the National Science and Engineering Council of Canada Industrial Fellowship by NSERC, the Izaak Walton Killiam Memorial Scholarship administrated by the Killiam Trust at the University of Albert, Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Studentship by AHFMR, the Andrew Stewart Graduate Prize by the Faculty of Graduate studies and Research at the University of Alberta, the Graduate Research Travel Awards by FGSR, and the 1987 Margaret Thompson Memorial Book Prize by the Department of Chemistry. After obtaining Ph.D.in 2000, I jointed Syntex Canada as a National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada Industrial Fellowship.I designed and synthesized a series of very potent macro cyclic based HIV protease inhibitors.I was then transferred to Syntex USA, which was later acquired by Roche and became one of Roches research centers. In the nine years there I worked in the design and synthesis of matrix metalloprotease (MMP) inhibitors, TNF convertase inhibitors, and p38 Kinase inhibitors for the treatment of arthritis. The team advanced three compounds into clinical trials.I joined the rapidly growing Small Molecule Department of Amgen Inc.in 2002.In the last three years I worked in the protease, kinase and GPCR based targets.
