The RING E3 ubiquitin ligase CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENESIS 1 (COP1) is evolutionarily conserved from plants to animals.COP1 regulates multiple developmental processes via its E3 ubiquitin ligase activity both in planta and animals. In mammalian cells, the ataxia telangiectasia mutated protein kinase (ATM) directly targets COP1 for phosphorylation on Ser-387, thereby triggering self-degradation.
