In the context of climate change and the EU floods directive, as adaptive structures,sustainable flood retentions (SFRBs) are increasingly discussed.Understanding the spatial distribution patterns of SFRB plays a key role in water resources management and flood risk control.This study aims at analyzing the spatial heterogeneity of flood-related variables (e.g.water storage, average flooding depth) of SFRB.During October 2008 to June 2010, 372 potential SFRB (including many operating reservoirs) characterized by 40 variables have been surveyed across central Scotland.In this study, we investigate the spatial similarity of 372 SFRBs by clustering.Furthermore, ordinary kriging, which is a spatial interpolation method, is applied to estimate numerical values for all key flood control variables everywhere in the study area.Moreover, the probability that certain threshold values relevant to flood control managers are exceeded is calculated by using disjunctive kriging.The clustering results present the spatial heterogeneity of flood-related variables of SFRBs across the central Scotland.The kriging analysis results provide an effectively screening tool in assessing flood control using SFRB.Furthermore, the findings provide water resources managers and planners with scientific support for flood management, water resources allocation in a chaining environment.
